You are most likely familiar with this song however when learning any song at the keyboard using your ears will help you develop your play by ear skills.
As you listen to the clip below try and be aware of the root, or bass line motion of the chords.
This is a simplified version of the chords in this song and the chart below is just to give you the basic harmonic framework of the song.
Although I listened to a Kirk Franklin version in Db maj. I choose to offer this tutorial in a simpler key (Fmaj) for beginners and a "singable" key for most congregations.
As you can see in the chorus part of the song there are a few slash chords. The letter name after the slash indicates the Bass note, or Chord inversion of the chord to be played.
"My Life Is In Your Hands"
You don't have to worry
And don't you be afraid
Joy comes in the morning
Troubles they don't last always
For there's a friend in Jesus
Who will wipe your tears away
And if your heart is broken
Just lift your hands and say
Oh
I know that I can make it
I know that I can stand
No matter what may come my way
My life is in your hands
With Jesus I can take it
With Him I know I can stand
No matter what may come my way
My life is in your hands
So when your tests and trials
They seem to get you down
And all your friends and loved ones
Are nowhere to be found
Remember there's a friend in Jesus
Who will wipe your tears away
And if you heart is broken
Just lift your hands and say
Oh
I know that I can make it
I know that I can stand
No matter what may come my way
My life is in your hands
With Jesus I can take it
With Him I know I can stand
No matter what may come my way
My life is in your hands
In the video below you will see the basic chord progression in simplified form. The repeating chorus at the end of the song modulates up one whole step to G major.
For additions help with transposition check out this lesson on Transposing Music.
A couple of other interesting things to note is that all the chords in this song are diatonic to the key of F maj. except for one, the A/C# is III maj instead of IIIm.
