Learn to play Amazing Grace on piano by using a few simple chords and watching a short video tutorial.
It is estimated that this well loved American gospel song is performed over 10 million times each year.
After experiencing the grace and love of God, John Newton, a former slave trader was converted to Christianity and in 1772 penned the lyrics to this timeless classic hymn.
He wanted to deliver the message that forgiveness and redemption is possible regardless of the sins people commit and that the soul can be delivered from despair through the mercy of God.
First step.
You will need to familiarize yourself with the melody to this song. If you can sing it you can play it! In fact you may just want to accompany your self or others vocally.
I advise that you take some time to pic out the melody on the piano if at all possible.
Though I have included the notes in written form below, if you will take the time to work at trying to hear the melody rather than to read it you will do much to improve you ability to play songs by ear.
Second step.
To learn this song you will need to be familiar with three basic chords in the key of C. Those chords are C major, F major and G major.
If you ar not yet familiar with these chords you may want to review the lessons on major chords and perhaps the lesson on voice leading.
You can watch the video below as well to see these steps demonstrated on the keyboard.
About the printed music.
Although you can play Amazing Grace on piano using only the three chords C, F and G major, you will notice I have added some alternatives for those of you a bit more familiar with chords and progressions.
